1.In a large saucepan, heat oil on medium. Sauté onion and garlic 3-4 minutes until tender.
2.Brown steak evenly, 2-3 minutes. Add kidney and mushrooms and cook, stirring, 2-3 minutes.
3.In a small jug, combine water or stock, wine and gravy powder, stirring, until smooth.
4.Stir into meat mixture with Worcestershire sauce and herbs. Bring to boil, stirring, until thickened. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, covered, 25-30 minutes, until beef is tender.
5.Preheat oven to 200°C. Spoon beef mixture among 4 ovenproof dishes.
6.Top each dish with a square of pastry and trim to fit. Bake 10-15 minutes, until pastry is golden. Serve pies with beans.
For a milder kidney flavour, soak in milk or cold water for 1 hour before preparing.
